Gabrielle Gianella

Mokhtar Paki
The WCRC Gallery's upcoming show features the artwork of twelve local artists who are members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender communities. The title of the show is also the name of a story by Richard Bruce Nugent, a gay male writer during the Harlem Renaissance, believed to be the first published fiction by an African American gay author.

The artists include Eliot K Daughtry, Gabrielle Gianella, Dvora Gordon, Coon Lam, Ajuan Mance, Taro Masushio, Nancy Otto, Mokhtar Paki, Kris Shanks, Jackie Thomason, Morningstar Vancil, Melissa West, and Li Yu.

A selection of the artists include: Dr. Ajuan Mance who renders African American community scenes in bold lines from many vantage points and with a vibrant and brooding palette; Coon Lam who presents a series of sensual ceramic pieces; Nancy Otto who presents a selection of her exciting glass work, Mokhtar Paki who paints men with great expressiveness and stunning color, and Jackie Thomason who captures the delight of nature with her camera.

The show runs May 20th through June 30th, 2005. And , June is recognized as LGBT Pride Month. A reception with the artists will be on Friday, May 20th, 6-9 PM. There will be live flute music by Kymberly Jackson.

The WCRC Gallery is located at 5741 Telegraph Avenue in Oakland. The gallery is wheelchair accessible. There is no charge for the show or the reception and there will be a no-host bar. The show is generously co-sponsored by the American Cancer Society.
