The Colors of Coping: Paintings by Frances
Dunham Catlett
The WCRC Gallery is delighted to feature the paintings of
Frances Dunham Catlett. Mrs. Catlett is a fourteen-year cancer
survivor. This show is part of The Art of Living Black,
(TAOLB) Bay Area Open Studios for African American artists.
Mrs. Catlett, now ninety four years old, moved to San Francisco
in 1946. She is considered to be the first Black student to
have attend Mills College in Oakland. Her first husband was
Albert Dunham, Katherine Dunhams brother. After Albert
passed away Frances married John Catlett, brother of Elizabeth
Catlett. Before she retired Mrs. Catlett was a professor in
the Graduate School of Social Work at Sacramento State University.
From 1962 until the present Mrs. Catlett has participated
in over fifty exhibits. She is represented in more than sixty
art collections and has received many awards for her art.
The show runs February 2 though March 29, 2003. A reception
with the Mrs. Catlett will be on Sunday, February 23rd, 1-4
P.M.
The WCRC Gallery is located at 5741 Telegraph Avenue in Oakland.
The gallery is wheelchair accessible. There is no charge for
the show or the reception.
Gallery hours are Monday Friday 9AM 5 PM and
by appointment.
