Janice Kishi Chow and Meredith Bowen Shamszad:
The Naked Heart
Paintings of Healing and Hope
The WCRC Gallery is pleased to feature the creative works
of Janice Kishi Chow and Meredith Bowen Shamszad. Both women
are inspired by the beauty and frailty of our bodies. Oakland
resident, Meredith Bowen Shamszad is a cancer survivor and
began painting in her fifties. She participates in weekly
process painting groups and uses tempera, acrylic and collage.
Shamszad believes that her expression of emotion has been
a cornerstone of her cancer treatment. She hopes that by sharing
her work with others facing life-threatening illness, she
can support and encourage self-expression and the healing
power of creativity. Shamszad creates her images with bold
swirls of vibrant colors at times and occasionally with soothing
pastels. Her work encompasses both the surreal and iconic.
Bay area native, Janice Kishi Chow was born in Fremont, California.
A forth generation Japanese American (Yonsei), Kishi Chow
was formally trained in art at UC Davis. Kishi Chow's studies
in Japan had a significant influence on her painting style.
She uses sweeps of luscious color to accentuate the soft roundness
of the bodies in her work. Kishi Chow's work overflows with
warmth, beauty and calmness, definitely meeting the goal she
has set for her paintings to convey hope.
The show runs May 9 through June 20, 2002. The opening reception
with the artists will be held Saturday, May 18, 1 - 3 PM.
Regular gallery hours are Mondays through Friddays 9 AM -
5 PM and by appointment. WCRC Gallery is located at 3023 Shattuck
Avenue, Berkeley. 510-548-9286, ext. 307. The gallery is wheelchair
accessible.
