Jan Hart-Schuyers: A Retrospective
Show
Masks, Stained Glass, Dolls, Paintings
The Women's Cancer Resource Center (WCRC) will participate
in this year's The Art of Living Black (TAOLB) Open Studios
event for local African American artists. The WCRC Gallery
features a retrospective show of the work of the late Jan
Hart-Schuyers, the co-founder of TAOLB.
The show runs February 1 through March 13, 2002 and will
include Hart-Schuyers' African-inspired papier-mâche
masks, stained glass, dolls, and paintings. Jan was an innovative
artist, working successfully in many mediums over a period
of three decades. Hart-Schuyers was also a past president
of the board of directors of ProArts, an educator and administrator
at Studio One, an editor of the 510 Artists Newsletter, and
an active member of the Bay Area Arts community. Her commitment
to the arts inspired her to devote literally thousands of
hours to various community arts organizations, thus offering
her gifts to hundreds of her fellow artists in the San Francisco
Bay Area.
The community is invited to participate in the Open Studios
tour on March 2 and 3 from 11 AM to 5 PM. The WCRC Gallery
will be open during the tour. Regular gallery hours are Monday
through Friday 9AM - 5PM and by appointment. There is no charge
for admission and the gallery is wheelchair accessible.
The Women's Cancer Resource Center holds cancer support groups
for African American Women and hosts a Sister to Sister Program
to address the issues of African American women with cancer.
All of the services of WCRC are free.
