The day will include meeting together as a large group and breaking out into smaller groups for specific healing arts experiences. Participants are asked to bring a photograph (or a copy of a photograph) of their loved one. WCRC will provide drinks and a healthy dessert and request that participants bring their own bag lunch .

Environmental Activism & the Politics of Cancer

Cancer Bitch

with Sandi Wisenberg

Thursday, July 16th, 7-9 PM

Sandi once thought breast cancer activism sounded boring, but she found herself airing her evolving opinions as well as her cancer experience on her blog, which is the basis of her recent book, The Adventures of Cancer Bitch. Wisenberg has harsh words for the medical establishment's indifference and for corporate-sponsored pink-ribbon campaigns that fail to sponsor adequate research into the environmental causes of cancer.

Yarn Divas/Chemo Caps

For knitters and other crafters (working with yarn is not a requirement)

Kelley Nayo

Kelley Nayo

2nd Saturdays, 10 – 11:30 AM
This class meets on the 2nd Saturday of each month from 10 AM – 11:30 AM. You are welcome to come and crochet or knit caps and hats to be given away to women with cancer or you can bring your own project to work on. The Saturday class will be with Kelley Nayo, who owned the Knitting Basket in Montclair Village and now produces wonderful wearable creative works through Kelly Designs, A Crochet Boutique.

Why are chemo caps so important to Kelley? "I spent a lot of time with my grandmother when I was growing up, and when I was a child, we used to sit in her bed in the evenings crocheting. We had a very close relationship and the rhythmic flow of crocheting, combined with the creative outlet kept us both centered. Grandma passed away in 2004 from small cell lung cancer and creating chemo caps is one of the ways I keep her spirit alive."

Crochet is therapeutic and I have turned to it repeatedly as an adult to get me through some of lifes biggest challenges. I look forward to encouraging others to use their craft for the same therapeutic benefits. Kelley can provide crocheting instruction or very basic knitting instruction. Come learn to crochet or bring a crafts project to work on in a friendly atmosphere.
